Who am I?

SilhouetteI’m Dan Smart, a 32 year old website developer, based in Swansea, UK. I have worked in the software development industry for over 11 years, with experience in web development, mobile handset development, and mobile networks. My current focus is web development, working freelance with a number of clients, working both on design and implementation of websites and web applications, also bringing in my mobile industry experience to be able to offer insight into the mobile web.When I’m not developing websites and software, I am a keen runner, involved with mime performance group Innovo Physical Theatre, and also actively involved in my local church.

July 2009 – present – Freelance Web Developer

Recent website work:

www.reference-tree.com - lead developer of Reference Tree application platform (Jan 2010 – current). Working on the CodeIgniter application framework and Doctrine ORM.

hft.thomson-reuters.com – developed media rich focus topic site for Thomson Reuters, based on WordPress, with extensive plugin and widget development.

www.ecmexchange.com – developed news and web community site for Thomson Reuters, based on WordPress MU.

www.dkcnews.com – WordPress site. Added slider, and modified various pages.

www.leeandthomson.com – WordPress site. Site modifications and updates in line with client requirements.

www.harringtonporter.com/blog – added WordPress-based blog element to site, integrated with site look and feel.

Choice Friends – to be published, awaiting content. Significant WordPress development, custom database, shop, custom events plugin, category-based menus.

www.energy-uk.org.uk – (replaced due to Energy UK organisational issues) developed Joomla-based site for energy organisation. Theme and components developed / customised.

www.optasportsdata.com – (now inactive) created interim corporate website in WordPress, based on supplied graphic design, incorporating video playback and a custom jquery video selector.

www.software-dynamics.co.uk – site modifications (added data collection form, automatic file listing and download functionality, drop down menus, additional static pages).

Sept 2007 – July 2009 – Student at Bible College of Wales, Swansea

Took a two year career break to study for a Diploma in Theology with Ministry Studies.

July 2005 – Aug 2009 – Applications/UI Team, Motorola

Managed the Messaging application components for the Motorola Z8 handset from conception to launch, managing third party companies, and developing related components in Symbian / UIQ.

Sept 2003 – July 2005 – UI/Application team – Feature Phones, Sendo

Handled development of UI widget integration layer for Teleca Mobile Suite 2 (MS2) – for MMS, WAP browser, and Content Management System on embedded GSM mobile handsets. Also travelled to Singapore (May 2005) to train colleagues in MS2 and system

March 2001 – August 2003 – Games team, Sendo

Development of games for embedded GSM mobile handset, including 2-player SMS games – from conception through development to customisation for mobile operators.

October 1999 – March 2001 – Software Developer – Communications, DERA

Worked on Corporate Research Project investigating intelligent adhoc network algorithms, developed test application in MFC (Visual C++) to enable and development analysis of algorithms.

Jun 1999 – Sept 1999, Jan 1999, Jun 1998 – Sept 1998 – Intern Web Developer, Reuters

Student internship. With small team I developed the Reuters Graduate Recruitment website, which won the Times Best Graduate Recruitment Website Award.
